UPMC Montefiore MRI Replacement

Allen + Shariff Corporation provided engineering services for an MRI replacement at UPMC Montefiore Hospital. The project included a complete relocation of the equipment room and upgrades to the exhaust system. The mechanical design included reworking branch ductwork and VAV systems, a new blower coil for equipment room cooling, and replacement of the general and emergency exhaust fans.

The project also included modifications to the plumbing, medical gas, and sprinkler systems. A new medical gas zone valve and alarm panel was provided to monitor nitrous oxide, oxygen, vacuum, medical air, and anesthesia waste lines within the MRI scan room.

Electrical engineering included modifications to general power, lighting, fire alarm, tele/data, nurse call, and security systems. Lighting in the MRI scan room included a nonferrous, filtered DC lighting system, with dimmable downlights, under-cabinet task lights, and an 8×8 scenic panel fixture for patient comfort during scans. Installation requirements for the MRI were strictly coordinated with the manufacturer to provide conduit, cable trays, and RF filters for room penetrations to supply electrical systems. A CCTV system was designed for patient monitoring, and a music system was installed for patient comfort and communication with staff during scans.
