UPMC Montefiore Generator Replacement

The project consisted of design of a 6,000 kW generator system to replace the existing 4,100 kW, 480 volt system which was overloaded and obsolete. The project included paralleling the three 2,000 Kw generators via new paralleling switchgear located in the parking garage of the adjacent Kaufmann building parking garage. A two hour fire rated room was created in the lowest level of the parking garage to house the generators and paralleling switchgear. Two hour fire rated cabling was installed from the new paralleling switchgear, in an underground utility tunnel, to new and existing transfer switches located in Montefiore hospital. The design included remote radiator system for each of the generators, a new 17,500 gallon above ground diesel fuel tank, ventilation system for the generator room and conditioning of the new paralleling switchgear room. Planned power outages within the hospital were required to transfer the system from the old generator system to the new.
