University of Pittsburgh BST Chilled Water Plant
Allen + Shariff Corporation provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design engineering services for the University of Pittsburgh upgrade of the BST Chilled Water Plant from 10,000 Tons to 15,000 Tons. Design consists of replacing (5) 1,000 ton chillers with (4) 2,500 Ton chillers. Replacement of an existing pumping system and a 12,500 ton cooling tower.
A 36” diameter bridge was designed to supply chilled water to the (4) new secondary pumping systems which supply chilled water to the Biomedical Science Tower, Biomedical Science Tower South, Eye & Ear Institute, Presbyterian University Hospital, Montefiore Hospital, Scaife Hall (University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine) and Western Psychiatric Hospital.
New 30” condenser water risers were installed from the level 8 chiller room to the level 17 roof to the cooling towers. This built in redundancy and along with other piping arrangements allowed the plant to work in two segregated systems or as one system. This built in flexibility to allow for maintenance to the chilled water plant without interruption to chilled water supply.
