Coastal Hospice at Ocean

Allen + Shariff completed full MEP design for the renovation of an originally planned club house into a hospice residence and outreach center for Coastal Hospice & Palliative Care. Coastal Hospice & Palliative Care is a non-profit community program founded in 1980 with facilities in Wicomico, Worcester, Dorchester, and Somerset counties in Maryland.

The mechanical system consisted of a geothermal water cooled variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system with dedicated outside air units that provided conditioned ventilation to the spaces. The geothermal system provided condenser water that is cooled and heated by the ground to the VRF and DOAS units. The VRF system is a high efficiency HVAC system with a mix of ducted and ductless indoor air handling units.

Allen + Shariff designed the plumbing, preliminary fire protection, and medical gas for this hospice care facility. Domestic services required a booster pump to provide adequate pressures to maintain patient and staff comfort. Fire protection systems were based upon a wet system utilizing an antifreeze system to maintain integrity for all exterior overhangs and unconditioned spaces. Medical gas design included oxygen tank storage, piping, and alarms serving the ground floor patient rooms.
