NAME: Matthew Scolieri

TITLE: Project Manager, Associate

OFFICE: Zelienople, PA

YEARS AT A + S: 5

Tell us a little about yourself. Family, hobbies, etc.

I am Pittsburgh born and raised. Outside of the office I enjoy traveling, training in the gym, experimenting with cooking meals, and reading the latest thriller. I also look forward to watching Steelers and Penguins games. In the summer time, you’ll find me on a golf course striving for that illusive hole-in-one.

What is your favorite part of being a member of Allen + Shariff?

The teamwork and camaraderie. You don’t feel like an island here. When there is a problem in need of a solution, brainstorming sessions among the engineers is a regular thing. No one is afraid to offer new solutions or offer a different perspective. Additionally, the group has each other’s backs when help is needed on a project to meet a deadline. Friday lunches, where the entire office all goes out to eat, are a great bonding activity too.

What do you love most about MEP engineering?

There’s a new challenge every day and it clicks. We aren’t designing the same widget for months at a time. We receive calls about all sorts of projects that owners need help with and every day, there is something new. Regarding the second part, this type of work just clicks in my head. I’m able to visualize the parts and pieces of equipment and how they interface. Because the concepts stick, it’s always nice to play to your strengths.

What has you the most excited about where Allen + Shariff is going in the future?

Here at Allen + Shariff, if you have an exciting idea or a new take on how to do something; people listen. We have the best of both worlds in that we are an established company with a solid history, but aren’t too large to change and improve a process. I’m excited for the new tools, processes, and education coming in the future.

Are you striving to be known for anything particular??

I would like to be known for my integrity, whether that is with dealing with clients or co-workers. In addition to that, from an engineering perspective, I want to be revered as an engineer who not only looks at the calculations, but also takes into account the constructability. For instance, “Can it actually be done?” A great design on paper is only great if it can be properly executed in the field.

What is one thing that has made you smile recently?

Coming home from work to find the family dog, Ace, clawing at the door and his tail wagging. I mean… look at that little guy.

What is something you would tell your 13-year-old self if you could?

All of that studying will pay off! Also, any challenge placed in your path is there for a reason and overcoming those will only make you a stronger and better person.

What is one thing in life that you can’t live without?

Friends and family. Without a strong foundation of people to share in life’s joys and struggles, life simply wouldn’t be the same.
