NAME: Don Haney

TITLE: Project Manager, Associate

OFFICE: Zelienople, PA

YEARS AT A + S: 5

Tell us a little about yourself. Family, hobbies, etc.

I grew up in the small town of Cheswick, outside of Pittsburgh, and went to Springdale High School.  Senior year, I was both captain of the football team and president of the drama club.  It was through drama club that I met my wife, Ruth, who went to a neighboring school and came to see our show.  This year will mark 4 years married and 12 years together.  10 months ago, we grew our family with the birth of our daughter, Jane.  We also have two dogs, Jack and Lilly.  Recently, most of our time has been devoted to raising Jane, and it is such a blessing to watch her grow and develop (especially now that she sleeps well.)  In our free time, we enjoy checking out local breweries and trying craft beers.  My personal hobbies include golfing and playing music.  I’ve been playing the drums for close to 17 years, guitar for about 15, and I found a free piano when we bought our house that I’ve enjoyed messing around with.

Allen + Shariff is known for its long-lasting client relationships over the years. How do you think about client relationships when it comes to day-to-day workflow?

I think client relationships are best maintained with clear and consistent communication.  I always try to respond to questions the same day they are asked.  If I don’t have an answer, I let them know that I’m working on it.  And of course, a great way to maintain a good reputation with a client is to put in the work required to deliver a quality product.

What is your definition of success?

Providing for my family.

Who inspires and motivates you?

I am motivated by my family and inspired by the leaders of this office.  Seeing the projects they have worked on and having access to their experience and wisdom makes me want to be a better engineer.

What types of resources have you used while working on our team?

My biggest resource is always my coworkers, especially the electrical team, Jim and Mike, and John Love before he retired.  They have always been willing to look at a problem with me and help me find the best solution.  I have also developed relationships with several vendors we work with for lighting, nurse call, and switchgear systems, and they are a great resource as well.

Where is your favorite destination you’ve visited, and why?

Cape Coral, FL.  It was the last childless vacation that my wife and I took.  We kayaked in the mangroves of Lover’s Key State Park and got inches away from some manatees.  We took a sunset dolphin cruise and saw 5 or 6 of them.  We walked through the Six Mile Cypress Slough Reserve and saw a few gators, and we picked seashells and watched a sunset on Captiva.

What fictional character best relates to you?

I have no idea, but my wife says Troy Bolton because of the whole high school sports + drama club thing.

What’s your favorite movie or show?

Movie – O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Show – Better Call Saul

What’s your favorite quote?

“Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.” – Willy Wonka
