NAME: Ali Arshian

TITLE: Senior Electrical Engineer

OFFICE: Columbia, MD

YEARS AT A + S: 15

Tell us a little about yourself. Family, hobbies, etc.

I’m married to my best friend and wife. We have twins who share the same birthday as me. My daughter is a dentist with two lovely sons (pictured), and my son is an emergency physician. I love to challenge my mind as much as possible. One of my hobbies includes watching all kinds of sports, especially soccer. I’m a fan of the Man City soccer club team and Barca.

Tell us about a time when you really saw the power of teamwork in action at A + S.

I see teamwork in the crunch times: when we have multiple projects with very close deadlines or an extensive number of projects.

In particular, I remember full company teamwork in our projects at the WHARF. The WHARF was designed by Allen + Shariff in all branches. Block Eight core and shell was completed by Columbia while the fit-out was done by Pittsburgh. Fast submissions for the Lisner project in the Columbia office are other examples of when I observed the team coming together to bring these visions to life.

Tell us about a time when a project really stretched you in some challenging ways. How did you get through it and how did you evolve/grow as a result?

As previously mentioned, I enjoy solving puzzles and brain exercise activities. I have used the internet, independent study, and manufacturer’s representatives as my sources to nail down new electrical items. Co-Gen, EV chargers, UPSs, PDUs, parallel generators, PVs, and similar are items where I have done extensive research to design them for the first time many years ago.

I’m also looking for a NetZero project as a challenge.

Who has been a mentor to you in the past that really helped you make it to a new level or next step in your career?

Upon moving to the US, I did not have any mentors; I studied on my own discovering topics such as design and coding. Now, I like to serve as a mentor to others.

What is one of the most significant ways you’ve seen the landscape change since when you first began at A + S?

Innovative young engineers are taking project management roles which will help Allen + Shariff to grow in the right direction.

How have you seen the firm lead into those changes?

Having the younger engineers take on a larger role is the right direction with the support of a few experienced engineers. Our staff in Columbia is a mix of experience levels with younger engineers and senior engineers/project managers. Some engineers (like James Hunt) can complete the project, design, drafting, and project management duties on the project by themselves.
