Mechanical (HVAC & Plumbing), Electrical Power,  Fire Alarm, Telecommunication, Data, Audio-Visual, TV/Cable Public Address, Surveillance Systems, Energy Modeling and LEED Prerequisite Commissioning for a new $10.3 Million, 37,000 SF community center.  The Southern Regional Tech/Rec Complex consists of two high school size gymnasiums, athletic wing, environmental science learning room, media room, multipurpose room, technology wing, internet cafe and other support spaces for the M-NCPPC Division of Parks and Recreation.  Allen and Shariff also worked with the Owner’s LEED consultant to obtain the necessary credits required for Certification by the USGBC.  The building design is registered with the USGBC and is designated to meet a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating, which includes a green roof above the facility entrance.

The mechanical system design included a ground source heat exchanger (geothermal), condenser water piping and pumping system, rooftop water source heat pump units, and indoor water source heat pump units.  The ground source heat exchanger is a vertical well field with eighty total wells.  All wells are 450 feet deep and contain 1-1/4” polyethylene piping.  Ten wells are piped into 3” piping circuits, for a total of eight circuits.  Each 3” circuit is extended to the mechanical room located in the building, where the circuits are manifolded together and distributed to water to water heat pumps, roof top units, and energy recovery units.

Tech Rec was awarded a “Gold citation” by the American Institute of Architects, Potomac Valley Chapter (highest honor).
