Allen & Shariff provided MEP engineering, BIM, and Commissioning services for Google, Inc. who moved its office from the Carnegie Mellon University campus to the former Nabisco factory in the Bakery Square Building #3 in the East End of Pittsburgh, PA.

Google 1.0 consists of approximately 44,000 SF of office space (6th and 7th floors).

Google 2.0 is the expansion of their offices to the 5th floor.  The 5th floor is roughly 33,000 SF and is primarily office, conference room spaces and several micro-kitchens.  The space was done in a Kennywood amusement park theme.

Google 3.0 is the expansion of their offices to the 3rd floor.  The 3rd floor is roughly 47,000 SF and is primarily used for office space.  The design theme for the 3rd floor is more of a natural outdoor type of space.  In several corridor areas, there are bamboo forests that are lit from below to provide an array of shadows and shapes as you walk through the space.  A corridor formed from metal lathe and a skim coat of concrete provides a unique cave like pathway.

Sub-metering was provided for mechanical and electrical systems per LEED and Google’s requirements.  Daylighting controls and dimming ballasts have been provided for all interior spaces with exterior daylight views.  Google has a data gathering system which was installed on Google 1.0 to monitor energy usage for all 4 floors.

Allen & Shariff utilized a BIM model for coordination of mechanical systems with architectural features. The MEP BIM model was exported for the architect to render for presentation purposes to Google staff members. The MEP BIM model was utilized by contractors to create coordination drawings and was also utilized by the energy modeling software to obtain LEED credits.

  • The existing building obtained LEED Platinum certification.
  • Google 1.0, 2.0, & 3.0 received LEED Gold certification.
