At its annual convention in Honolulu, the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) named Pittsburgh’s North Shore Connector project as one of the most significant construction projects of 2011 and North Shore Constructors (A Trumbull-Obayashi Joint Venture) as one of only 16 firms to receive its coveted Alliant Build America Award. The awards are considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the United States.

“This is the second consecutive year that the family of companies represented by PJ Dick-Trumbull-Lindy Paving has earned recognition from AGC,” said CEO Clifford R. Rowe, Jr. in reference to PJDick’s 2011 AGC award for the CONSOL Energy Center. “We are extremely proud of the collaborative spirit and diverse partnerships represented by the North Shore Connector, a project that illustrates a significant regional investment in support of a revitalized Downtown Pittsburgh and multiple North Shore venues.”

The five year, $156 million Trumbull project – representing 1.2 miles of twin tunnels from the Gateway Subway Station underneath Stanwix Street and the Allegheny River to the North Shore of Pittsburgh – provides a strong foundation for the Port Authority of Allegheny County to construct future extensions of its TService to other destinations. “The North Shore Connector is truly a catalyst for future development opportunities throughout the region,” added Rowe.

The North Shore Connector required construction of twin tube-bored tunnels beneath the Allegheny River. North Shore Constructors had to build station shells for two underground stations, launch and receiving pits for the tunnel boring machine, perform utility work, stabilize soil and replace sidewalks and streets. In addition, the team preserved a 780-square-foot mural from the old downtown station, removing it tile by tile for installation in the new station.

“These projects demonstrate the qualities that have made the construction industry great: hard work, ingenuity and world-class skill,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “Contractors like these are not only building exceptional projects, they’re building a better, more prosperous America.”

The Alliant Build America Awards recognize the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated a record number of submissions this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and coordination with partners, among other criteria.
