Al Ain Hospital

Centerpoint Tower

Centerpoint is a joint venture between SBE&R and Turner Construction Company. Allen & Shariff Corporation was responsible for the entire MEP/FP & IT design for this 750,000 SF mixed-use project which includes 388 market rate apartment building (including state-of-the-art fitness center, resident lounge with billiards room), 50,000 SF of restaurant and retail space, a renovated 600 seat theater, and a 400-space multi-level parking facility. M&T Bank Stadium (Ravens)

Notches in its facade give M&T Bank Stadium a unique style. Views into and out of the ballpark are encouraged through its archways at ground level, while glimpses into the stadium will be seen from the surrounding elevated roadways. The stadium bowl seats 68,400 fans on three levels, and an upper-level concourse provides a view of the Baltimore skyline from about eight stories high.

Mahan Hall Interior Restoration

Restoration and preservation project in Mahan Hall on the Yard of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The project required a detailed study and assessment of environmental and other factors and conditions due to a complete deterioration and failure of painted plaster walls and ceilings.

National construction employment expanded by 17,000 jobs in November, according to a Dec. 6 report by the U.S. Department of Labor. Nonresidential construction added 7,700 positions on a monthly basis, contributing nearly half (45.2 percent) of the overall gain in construction employment.

19,000 Construction Jobs Created in March

The U.S. construction industry gained 19,000 jobs in March and the construction unemployment rate fell to 11.3 percent (non-seasonally adjusted), according to the April 4 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Nonresidential construction segments added 6,700 jobs in March, a marked improvement from the 2,800 jobs (revised) added in February.

400 Construction Jobs Created in February

NONRESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION GAINS A HANDFUL OF JOBS IN FEBRUARY “The 400 jobs added in February is more in line with what would be expected given economic and atmospheric forces.”—ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu.
The U.S. nonresidential construction industry gained just 400 jobs in February, according to the March 7 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

48,000 Construction Jobs created in February

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 236,000 in February, with job gains in professional and business services, construction, and health care. In February, employment in construction increased by 48,000. Since September, construction employment has risen by 151,000. In February, job growth occurred in specialty trade contractors, with this gain about equally split between residential (+17,000) and nonresidential specialty trade contractors (+15,000). Nonresidential building construction also added jobs (+6,000).

48,000 Construction Jobs Created in January

The construction industry gained 48,000 jobs in January, according to the Feb. 7 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Nonresidential construction gained 21,000 jobs, representing a significant rebound from the 14,100 jobs lost by the segment in December. Nonresidential construction accounted for 47.7 percent of January’s total construction industry job gain and 28.1 percent of the construction industry job gain in the past year.

AIA Silver Medal Award

On October 11, 2012, at the annual AIA Design Pittsburgh event, one our projects was awarded the Silver Medal. The winning project is the North Shore Connector Gateway Station. The architectural firm was Light/Motion Collaborative (joint venture of Edge Studio and Pfaffmann + Associates). The last time the Silver Medal was awarded was 4 years ago.

Architecture Billings Continue Resurgence

Business conditions continued to strengthen at architecture firms in January, as the AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) climbed to 54.2, signifying the strongest growth in five and a half years. The index’s seasonal adjustment factors were revised in January, leading to some revisions in the historical data, but the overall trend of the last six months remained the same, with firm billings growing every month. Inquiries into new projects also remained strong in January, and firms reported a strong increase in the value of new design/design-build contracts.

January 23, 2013 – Business conditions at architecture firms continue to improve. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the January ABI score was 54.2, up sharply from a mark of 51.2* in December. This score reflects a strong increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 63.2, much higher than the reading of 57.9 the previous month.

Architecture Billings Index: April 2013

After indicating increasing demand for design services for the better part of a year, the Architecture Billings Index has reversed course in April. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the April ABI score was 48.6, down from a mark of 51.9 in March. This score reflects a decrease in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings) and is the lowest mark since July 2012. The new projects inquiry index was 58.5, down from the reading of 60.1 the previous month.

Architecture Billings Index: Strongest since 2007

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the February ABI score was 54.9, up slightly from a mark of 54.2 in January. The new projects inquiry index was 64.8, higher than the reading of 63.2 the previous month – and its highest mark since January 2007.

Construction Unemployment Drops to 14.7 Percent in March

The construction industry unemployment rate fell to 14.7 percent in March, down from 15.7 percent in February, according to the April 5 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor. Geothermal Heating & Cooling Overview and Examples

A few feet below the earth’s surface the ground remains at a relatively constant temperature. Like a cave, the ground temperature is warmer than the air above it during the winter and cooler than the air in the summer. The Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) takes advantage of this by exchanging heat with the earth through a geothermal loop system.

Middle East to host nearly 300 skyscrapers by 2015 – BIM

Skyscraper construction is booming across the Middle East, with the region projected to have nearly 300 skyscrapers of at least 150 meters tall by 2015, according to a recent study titled “The Middle East: 20 Years of Building Skyscrapers” from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Building Information Modeling (BIM) software is driving the increasingly complex design and construction of these skyscrapers, according to an industry expert.

More Jobs, More Construction?

Is job creation a leading indicator for construction by sector? Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 165,000 in April, with job gains in professional and business services, food services and drinking places, retail trade, and health care. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth averaged 169,000 per month. The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for February was revised from +268,000 to +332,000, and the change for March was revised from +88,000 to +138,000. With these revisions, employment gains in February and March combined were 114,000 higher than previously reported.

More Positive Momentum for Architecture Billings

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the March ABI score was 51.9, down from a mark of 54.9 in February. This score reflects an increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 60.1, down from the reading of 64.8 the previous month.

Nonresidential construction spending up 0.7% in February

As a sign of an improving economy, the nation’s nonresidential construction spending rose 0.7 percent in February, according to the April 1 construction spending report by the U.S. Commerce Department. Total nonresidential construction spending presently stands at $575.6 billion on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, and is up 2.6 percent from one year ago.
